A bad hair day can have a direct impact on a person’s self-esteem. No one knows this better than the stylists at Thompson & Co Salon Parlor, who aim to help their clients feel confident and strong every day. They recently accomplished their goal by giving haircuts to adults with developmental disabilities.
The Mayor’s Youth Empowerment Program (MYEP),facilitates personal growth and community inclusion to people with disabilities. MYEP offers two programs for their service individuals: the Adult Day Program and the Residential Program. The Adult Day Program, which serves over 60 individuals, assists in developing life skills, community integration, and maintaining competitive employment. The Residential Program, with residential environments in Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty, aids in developing and maintaining the skills necessary to live in the least restrictive environment possible.
MYEP truly places their service individual's needs as their top priority. Their leading principle is “Service Before Self”. The staff considers all benefits and impacts before making decisions that affect their service individuals.
“It isn't everyday when we are able to give back our talent to our community, but what an amazing way to do so. This just shows how amazing a simple haircut can change someone's day around,” said salon owner, Bobby Thompson. These individuals returned to the community looking fresh and feeling confident with the support of Thompson & Co Salon Parlor.
