An important part of Mercy Iowa City’s mission is to improve the health of the community. They continuously strive to do this by increasing accessibility to health services for all of Johnson County, including some of the area’s most vulnerable residents, its children. As a founding sponsor of “Get Moving for Healthy Kids” by originally funding the Healthy Kids Community Care Endowment Fund in the Johnson County Community Foundation and continuing to support this event each year, Mercy Hospital is doing just that.
“Get Moving for Healthy Kids” is an annual walk and run event that serves a dual purpose for local children. First, the walk promotes Healthy Kids Community Care, school-based free medical clinics that offer physicals, prescriptions, and more to residents ages 0-21. These clinics have been in operation since 2007, after access to health care was identified as a barrier to learning for area students. Proceeds from the walk and run benefit Health Kids Community Care clinics.
Second, the run and walk event promotes childhood exercise. Physical activity enriches a child’s life in many ways. Exercise aids in the development of interpersonal skills, enhances academic performance, and helps establish a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. “Get Moving for Healthy Kids” offers various youth and adult walk and run distances, encouraging kids to participate and get moving.
Mercy Iowa City is making a difference in the lives of Johnson County youth. Their support of “Get Moving for Healthy Kids” ensures area children have access to healthcare services.
