Frequently Asked Questions

·  What size chandelier or pendant light should I use for this room?

Approximate sizing is dependent of room size for best size options take the length and width in feet for the room and add those together to get the total in inches a fixture should be.

Example: 12ft x 14ft → 12+14 = 26-inch fixture

·  How high should I hang a light fixture above a dining table?

This is a preference from person to person a good rule to use is 5 ½ - 6 ft from the floor to the bottom of the fixture with a standard height table (28-30inches) for tables that are taller add the amount above the standard height to your measurement off the floor.

·  How high should a pendant light hang over a kitchen island?

This is a preference roughly 6ft from the floor to the bottom of the fixture. Take into consideration if you have bar seating at the island or if you can see into a living area. Being able to see just under the bottom most part of the fixture is the most functional and will differ from person to person.

·  Can I hang a chandelier in a room with low ceilings?

If there is a table below or an object that will always be below the chandelier then yes. Try to ensure that any fixtures you install will not be in an area where a person could walk into the fixture. A semi flush or flush mount light is best for areas such as walkways or areas where a person could walk under the fixture.

·  How do I center a light fixture if the electrical box isn't centered?

We always suggest contacting a qualified electrician for something like this. There could be more then one option on how to achieve this. Such as having the electrical box relocated to the correct location or having them install a swag kit. If you are going with the swag option, this will only work with fixture that hang from chain or wire and fixtures that have enough extra wire and chain to allow for the light to be swagged. Fixtures on metal down rods can not be swagged and the only option is to have the electrical box moved to the correct location.

·  What type of fixture works best for a foyer, entryway, or staircase?

This is personal preference. If you have a tall 2 story house a chandelier or lantern style fixture would work, if you have an entry with 8-9ft ceiling a flush or semi flush mount light would be best.

·  How many pendant lights should I hang over my island?

This is dependent on the size of your island.

For Small Islands (Under 5ft) 1-2 pendants depending on size of fixture

For Medium Islands (5-7ft) 2-3 Pendants depending on size of the fixture

For Large Islands (8ft and larger) 3 pendants is standard. Or you a single linear fixture can be used in place of multiple pendants.

·  Should my light fixture be wider or narrower than the table below it?

A fixture should be narrower than the width of your table to ensure that you don’t hit the fixture when sitting down at the table. To find the best size for your table measure the width of the table and make sure the fixture you pick is 50-60% if that measurement.

Example: if your table is 42 inches wide the fixture should be no wider than 21-26 inches.

For longer tables you might consider 2 smaller fixtures or a linear fixture.

·  Can I install a heavier chandelier on my existing electrical box?

Always check the max fixture weight rating for your specific electrical box. If you are unsure have a qualified electrician look at it. In some cases, you may need to have the box replaced with a heavier duty box or a custom bracing application added to ensure safe installation of heavier fixtures.

·  What style of light fixture would look best in my space?

Style comes down to preference and the items around your new fixture. Type of room? What you need the fixture to do? What the style of the room around the fixture is?

Example: You need a dining room chandelier above a table. How tall is your table? What colors is the hardware on your door handles any metal on your table or chairs in the room? Is the space filled with a specific style of artwork or furniture. Pick something that will complement those items or if you are planning on changing those items as well pick a fixture that will complement whatever the new items and hardware will be.

·  How do I determine the correct hanging height for a two-story foyer chandelier?

Take into consideration things like windows in the area, stair landings, what area is the light box is centered over. If the light is in an open area and does not interfere with someone walking down the stairs you have multiple options. such as centering the fixture on a large picture window, centering the fixture on the top half of the 2-story area or if you need more light down lower you can have the fixture centered in the total height from floor to ceiling. We suggest discussing the different options with your installer at the time of installation. Always ensure that no wires are cut until you are sure of location to ensure you have enough to make proper electrical connections.

·  What is the recommended spacing between multiple pendant lights?

Standard spacing is 24-36 inches from center of fixture to center of fixture, with a suggested minimum gap of 18 inches between the outer most portion of the fixture. This will also depend on the size of you island and the overall size of the fixtures you are installing.

·  Can I install a dimmer switch with this light fixture?

For fixtures with removable bulbs you will just need to ensure the bulbs you purchase are dimmable bulbs. For LED integrated (non-removable bulb fixtures) see manufacturer information for dimmability and switch requirements. Also be aware that older dimmers are not always compatible with LED bulbs as they do not have the same inside components as an LED rated dimmer. To see if you have a compatible dimmer take the cover plate off and look for a LED stamp in the metal of the dimmer or a stamp that says For Incandescent fixtures only.

·  What bulb type and brightness should I use for this fixture?

Each fixture will have a max wattage and bulb base type for the specific fixture. Where you will have options is the kelvin tone or light output color of the bulbs you want. These are typically from 2,700k – 5000k the smaller the kelvin tone number the warmer and more yellow or orange the color will look when illuminated. 3,000-3,500 k will be the closest to natural sunlight in color tone the larger numbers after that 4,000-5,000k will start taking on a blue tone.

·  Do I need professional installation for this light fixture?

We always recommend having a qualified electrician install any fixture you purchase as some wiring and mounting applications are not perfect and minor customizations may need to be made to the mounting or wiring to safely install your fixture. Some vendors will also require qualified professionals to be the installers to cover any warranties a fixture may have.
