Adopt a Garden

In life, we are thrust into places, meet people & do things we never expect.

When asked, “why did you choose working for Hospice” it always makes me smile. I never chose hospice, it chose me.  As Volunteer Coordinator at Bluebonnet Health Services, I am thankful for the choice; it makes me humble. Daily, I meet wonderful people through this job; patients, volunteers, staff and community. It is through one community project that makes my heart especially glad.

Bluebonnet Health Services, owned by Mark & Holley Walsh adopted a garden at the Carleen Bright Arboretum for our patients’ families.  It is a beautiful place for quiet reflection and the healing qualities of nature. Near the garden, is a memorial bench provided by a family we previously served.  Erica Yeary shared, “When my mom was living she loved to take my three children for a walk on the nature trail and look at all the beautiful plants and flowers… When mom passed, unexpectedly, we learned we could create a memorial bench in her honor.”  The bench dedicated to “Wowie” is located beside the Bluebonnet Garden.  “Our family visits the garden to reminisce about mom and two years ago on Mother’s Day, my husband proposed to me next to mom’s bench as we had a picnic lunch.”

Working with the Arboretum staff and all the Master Gardner’s we receive many blessings. They teach us plant vs. weed! They share stories about plants that attract butterflies and teach us how to care for them.  Janet, Arboretum Director, a tiny blonde woman with an infectious smile, dashes around the facility with precision; she directs projects to the finish line.

The partnership of Bluebonnet Health Services and Adopt-a-Garden at The Arboretum provides a place of celebration and solitude.

“This special place has brought our family great joy, peace and a sense of mom’s presence… I am grateful that the Arboretum provides such a place of beauty to remember a loved one.”
