What Can a Cookie do?

Girl Scouts are known for camping, crafts, s’mores and mostly, delicious cookies.  Cookie sales help support the local Council, Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf; the camp in Breaux Bridge, the award-winning Camp Bon Temps; and individual troops themselves to help with their activities and expenses.

But little girls have big hearts.  Many of the girls choose to use their funds to help others in our community.

Troop 109 used their cookie proceeds to shop for pet supplies for local animal shelters and they loved visiting with the puppies!  Troop 167 helped organize a food drive and donated items bought with their cookie profits – boxes of cookies were also donated by many troops across Acadiana.  Troop 470 used their cookie funds to purchase and donate wigs to cancer fighters through Miles Perret Cancer Services. Troops 402 and 2231 again organized a toy drive to help benefit local families in need for Christmas, for three years and counting!  Troop 2521, based in Youngsville and Broussard, continued collecting and distributing new and used children’s books as was started by Becca F., a Girl Scout graduate, in 2011.  Their running total has surpassed 2000 books donated to kids and classrooms across the city.  Some girls take their cookie proceeds to help at global levels.  Megan F., from Troop 2063, used several years of her cookie sale money to go to Costa Rica and Panama to aid in sea turtle conservation efforts.

Service Unit 208, consisting of over 20 troops in Broussard, Youngsville, Milton and Plantation school areas, collected over 200 pairs of socks at their annual Christmas Event Sock Drive and Snowball Fight.  Brand new socks in all sizes are balled up and used by the girls as their ammunition for their indoor snowball fight, then laundered and donated, along with collected toiletries, to the Stella Maris Center for the homeless.

So when a Girl Scout asks if you want to support and purchase cookies, remember what that cookie, and that girl, can do!
