Our Story

The roots of Goodwill originated in 1902, when Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister from Boston, who had compassion for people with disabilities and disadvantaging conditions. His innovative social program allowed people to perform meaningful work repairing unwanted goods and items. The selling of the repaired donated items allowed workers to earn a living wage but also gain dignity and independence. This cycle of donating, repairing, selling, and paying wages was the beginning of Goodwill Industries.

Today, Heart of Texas Goodwill (HOTGW) continues to transform lives through the power of work. Nearly 400 employees are dedicated to help improve the quality of life for people who have barriers to employment by providing skills training and work opportunities. Our donation centers, retail centers, outlet facilities, and e-commerce site help raise funds for Mission Services programs. Four Job Connections and a robust virtual services program provide the platform for programs designed to help individuals in every area and stage in life.

Our Work

Young adults 17+ years can obtain high school diplomas through the online RISE program. Individuals 16 to 96 can utilize ACCELERATE to fast track their job search and financial stability. OPERATION GOOD JOBS specifically helps veterans and their immediate families successfully transition into civilian life, matching their unique skills with current job needs and desired career advancement. HOTGW also partners with local groups to provide job training skills and job placement opportunities for individuals with disabilities through VOCATIONAL ADJUSTMENT TRAINING and WORK ADJUSTMENT TRAINING programs and Contract Services.
