The Crowded Closet is a non-profit thrift store and international gift shop. We are located at 1213 Gilbert Court, Iowa City. All the profits of the Crowded Closet go to support Mennonite Central Committee, a global relief and development agency, as well as local community relief and service organizations. The thrift store sells donated goods: clothing for men, women and children, housewares, furniture, toys, books and antiques. We are in continuous need of clean, quality items in good repair. Similar to other thrift stores, we are not able to launder items or repair things that are broken. Please donate your clothes in a separate bag from other items. The Gift Shop sells handcrafted items from around the world, purchased from fair trade organizations. The International Gift Shop section of the Crowded Closet features the work of artisans from around the world. From jewelry and household furnishings to chocolate, everything in the Gift Shop is fair trade. We sell items from several fair trade companies including Equal Exchange, Baskets of Cambodia, Servv and Divine Chocolate.
A new camel well, constructed with MCC funds, will bring new life and hope to the North Kanem school community in Chad. This MCC project will assure a clean, reliable source of water for the community for an estimated minimum of 20 years. A team of 7 workers, including engineers, masons and laborers, completed the well in one month. (MCC photo/Jon Austin)
